Skip is excited. His dad wanted him to look at driving schools and check how much the tuition fees are for a course. Skip knew there's a possibility his dad will buy him a new car. Seeing how Skip moped for a month after the skiing accident he got into last winter, all his father ever wanted was to see was Skip get active again. Skip could not even bear to get out of the house and use his scooter to visit his friends like he used to do a lot before the accident.

Mr. Whitney and his wife knew that Skip and his friends were deeply saddened by what happened at the accident. Their friend, Tommy lost his right leg. They tried consoling their friend while he moped at home but they just could do anything to convince Tommy that he could do so much more even if he lost a leg. To Tommy, the world ended with what happened to him. No longer will he be able to enjoy riding his scooter with his friends. No longer will he be able to finish the snowboard instructor course that he was trying so hard to learn so he could get a part time job while on vacation at the ski tracks.

Skip and Tommy are the closest among their group of friends and Skip just feels so frustrated that he couldn't do anything to help. He even felt guilty that it took him a week after the accident to visit Tommy at home. He had such a difficult time dealing with the aftermath of the incident. Until now, he is attending a support group and taking a course that would he hoped would help stop the nightmares that plague him every night. He moped around for 3 days trying to think of a way and something to say that would help Tommy know and feel how much he is willing to be there for Tommy. The first day he visited Tommy, he saw Tommy staring at a picture they took riding Skip's scooter. Tommy looked so sad, it broke Skip's heart.

Mr. Whitney knew it would be so hard for his boy but he appreciates what his son is doing and he would just to make him happy in his own way so he's buying him a car. He knows it would help a lot of Skip has a car since he could take Tommy out for a ride or just drive Tommy around town.
